What underwear will work best with my wedding dress?

How to Pick the Right Underwear for your Wedding Dress Style

You’ve found it. The one. The wedding dress to wow the whole house down. You’ve even got your shoes all sorted, too. You go, girlfriend. But what about underwear? It’s the last piece in the puzzle, and sometimes the last thing you’ll think about with everything else that’s going on before The Big Day.

Your choice of bridal underwear really is crucial if you want to max out the visuals of your wedding dress on your big day. So we’ve put together this guide to bridal underwear to ensure you’ve got everything (and we mean everything!) covered.

The Right Underwear for Low-Back / Open-Back Wedding Dresses

Option 1: Bodysuits

These skin-hugging beauties are perfect for a seamless look under your wedding dress. Featuring moulded cups and invisible hems, bodysuits are a go-to option for comfort over the full course of your big day. They’re especially good for wearing under a beaded low-back gown

Don’t forget: a bodysuit might not be your best bet if you’re wearing something slinky and bias-cut (as the material could show through). And if you’ve gone for a low-back wedding dress, you might need to use a bit of body tape to prevent movement.

It’s also important to consider your body length when picking out a bodysuit. If you have a longer body, for example, then shorts may ride up under your wedding dress as you move. If this sounds like you, the brief option would be a wiser and comfier fit.

Where? We recommend Ender Legard, who also offer a made-to-measure fit for their bodysuits. Or try Spanx, Ivette, The Heist, Nubian Skin or The Pantry Underwear.

Option 2: Bra Convertors

Bra convertors give you the option of wearing a low-back wedding dress (or an open-back one) with your favourite everyday bra.

Where? You’ll find bra convertors at ByeBra and Perfection Beauty (available at Debenhams).

Option 3: Backless and Strapless Bustier

By choosing a backless, strapless bustier, you’ll get support and lift for a comfortable fit. A great underwear option for under a strapless wedding dress.

Where? Try Betty & Belle online. Designers include Ultimo and Poirier.

The Right Way to Go Bra-less Under Your Wedding Dress

Option 1: Adhesive Bras

These bras work well in giving some support with any backless wedding dress.

Where? Available online at Freebra of Sweden, Nubian Skin and Magic Bodyfashion.

Option 2: Inserting cups into your wedding dress

If you’re wearing a backless or low-back bridal dress, you might want to consider adding cups into your gown.

The cups are just like the ones you see in everyday bras, so you also get a natural shape and a little bit of extra lift. They can be padded or non-padded, too.

Cups can be added by most alteration places, but they may not always be suitable for every dress style, so do check at your first fitting appointment.

Option 3: Lift Its, Nipple Covers and Breast Lift Tape

Lift It cups and breast lift tape are great options for a natural-looking lift. Don’t leave it until your wedding morning to test them out, though: they take a bit of getting used to!

The Pantry Underwear in London offer one-to-one tutorials on how to apply breast lift tape. The tape can go up to a size H cup.

If you’re not wanting any lift or support, nipple covers are the perfect solution for you. Go for silicone nipple covers if you can: they’re less visible than the fabric petals as they follow a natural shape, plus they’re available in a wide range of skin tones.

Where? ByeBra, ASOS or Magic Bodyfashion.

The Right Way to Avoid VPL Under Your Wedding Dress

Option 1: Seamless Briefs and Thongs

Seamless underwear is the ideal choice for wearing under a slinkier or soft a-line wedding dress.

Don’t forget: make sure you match your underwear to your skin tone – don’t go white to match the dress!

Where? Figleaves, M&S, Nubian Skin or Skims by Kim Kardashian West. (Sizes from XXS to 5XL.)

Option 2: Control Shorts and Briefs

These are the best option if you want to feel supported throughout the day. The longer-leg finish is great for wearing under a bias-cut wedding dress.

Where? Available from Spanx, Nubian Skin and Magic Bodyfashion.

Option 3: Invisible/Stick-On Underwear, or None At All

That’s right: dare to go bare!

Sometimes brides just feel most comfortable wearing no underwear at all. It’s also a flawless way to achieve a seamless yet comfortable look.

If you’re not willing to brave full commando, an invisible stick-on G-string will give you all the comfort you need. Guaranteed no VPL.

Where? Try By Wishes, ASOS or Magic Bodyfashion.
